No need to get frustrated
From Quincysan on Oct 12, 2010
I'm starting to notice a pattern in myself and in other people who post here. HRC is the first stop in learning to record for many of its users. Most don't make it past the ever present, "which interface should I buy?" question. Some make it to "Which pre should I buy?" and then someone says that it's not the pre they need to focus on, it's the mic. At this point, I think many users suffer brain implosions and never post, or think, again.
Once we buy a bunch of equipment that someone recommends, we experiment with it. Now we have experience in knowing one thing, so when someone asks a question about something, we regurgitate an item from our equipment list and say how much we "love" it. We may love it, but we also don't know anything else. This is the next step in a developing home recording poster. Absolute recommendations based on limited experiences.
Then we experiment with a few other items of comparative function and find out how right or wrong we were in proxy-recommending these recommended pieces of equipment. I think I'm at this step. I'm humble enough to realize I am only offering an opinion and that my opinion is biased, but for some reason I want to lash out against people in the first and second stage of developing recording knowledge. Those who just want to know how to set up their recording interface and those who only know one thing and spout it as the bees knees. Whether I snap at them or not, they need to RTFM and experiment further before recommending something, respectively. Even so; why the aggression? Probably some kind of stupid internalized pissing contest.
After all, just because I'm experienced enough to call out when someone is making a limited recommendation doesn't mean my less limited recommendation is experienced enough to speak the absolute truth. At this point, when someone wants to know "which interface to buy" I give the frustrating question-as-an-answer thing that really pissed me off when I was in the first two "stages" of forum posting.
"Just tell me the answer please!"
When you're ignorant, you know someone else knows better than you. You want what they have because they know better than you. Ironically, it's the people at the second stage of learning that give most of the easy answers. Once I started asking myself questions, I stopped asking questions. Always better to take the time and think for yourself!
When it comes down to it...maybe we should all just shut up, buy a lot of a equipment, and continue to shut up while we experiment with it. When we're done experimenting with it, we should probably shut up so we don't discourage those who are in the prior stages of learning.
Why do we post on forums again?
