First blog, first steps towards a "home"-studio!
From [ins]anarchist on Jan 20, 2007
For those unfamiliar, I'll start with the basics. I've been playing in bands since I was 12 years old, and played in my first national touring band at 21. Recording-wise, I started recording my band onto a simple two-track tape deck with mic ins back in the 12-13 yrs. old range. Eventually, I got a simple four-track, then a slightly more advanced four-track, and then right about the time when computers started becoming viable recording mediums, I started using them. Now, I've amassed nearly enough equipment to start recording "for real", and hopefully this blog will contain my progress as I journey towards a "real" home-studio!
So far, I've got:
- a decent computer
- a good set of monitors (KRK RP5's)
- a decent mixer/pre (when it works) (Behringer UB2442FX-PRO)
- a good interface (Delta 1010)
- some XLR cables
- some rack gear (compressor, noise suppressor, and a borrowed sonic maximizer)
- a Realistic EQ my dad built from a kit in the 70's or 80's
...and a bunch of ambition! Obviously, first on the list is a fair amount of decent microphones. I've decided on a budget of $1000-1500 total for all equipment needed, with my wallet leaning on the side of $1000. I'll also need to sound-treat the room, a 15' x 15' practice space with several other bands practicing in nearby rooms. Not the most ideal conditions, but as a twenty-something apartment owner, it's really the only sensible option. I plan on using primarily carpet/carpet padding, along with possibly cubicle walls padded with foam. Really, I'm not sure what I'll do but with the help I've been receiving here at the forums, I'm sure I'll figure something out!
Other misc. equipment I'll have to at least consider includes:
- a decent mono or stereo preamp (most likely tube)
- possibly a patch bay
- a desk (if the one I've got is too big for the space)
- a good outboard reverb, as the room will have less-than-desirable acoustics
The ultimate goal is to be recording enough bands to pay for at least part of the practice space rent, at to help pay off some of this equipment. I'll do my best to keep this blog updated, assuming anybody will be reading it!
If you've got comments/questions, please post 'em! I believe there's a comments thing turned on so use it! :)

*EDIT: apparently there isn't a comments section, so I guess I'll just have to assume people are reading and keep writing!
*EDIT: we've got private messaging! Use that :D
