New Martial Arts Adventures
From dB Masters on Jan 10, 2007
As some of you now, while I have been training mixed martial arts for a couple of years now with my wife and kids, I had some serious disagreements about training, especially where the kids are concerned, with my instructor. The instructor I also got into business with and got very involved in the gym itself, so the splitting from the gym was hard for me, and I presume him as well, though he would never admit it. I taught a few classes a week to give him some time for other stuff, did the web work and so on...
Anyway, after leaving I was jonesin' to train something...so I signed up for a Tae Kwon Do class locally that is run by a couple people I kinda know (well, have met a couple times, nice people) and figured if it was good I'd see if the kids want to try it. In addition we signed up for a typical fitness center where my wife has friends that go to do classes with and such.
So far, TKD is pretty fun, but works a whole different muscle group than my other training. My other training was more grappling and kickboxing (mostly boxing), TKD is 75% kicking (that's what they say, I'd say more like 90% kicking) and HIGH kicking, tough for an old fat guy.
That being said, I am getting good stretching and limberness coming back, I can feel it. My balance is already improving too. Most of the "self-defense" type stuff in TKD, at least the type I am learning, is virtually worthless, most of the stuff would never work in a real street type situation, but still, it's a skill none the less.
Interesting so far...I am learning some new skills. Not fighting skills by any means, but skills, and getting back into shape after the holiday season. Whether fighting skills or not, the limberness and balance required to do some of the stuff is pretty cool.
Gives me a whole new appreciation for people like Jackie Chan.
