Help!!!!!

Just bought an Alesis multimix USB 8, comes with Cubase LE. I plugged the mixer in, connected the USB, the PC (windows XP) sounded like it recognized it and installed Cubase. I started the Adobe based tutorial and when it I try to record nothing happens. I am basically unable to get any feedback onscreen from the mic. I have never done any of this before and want to learn really bad but I have already hit this roadblock and am very frustrated. Any suggestions are welcome, thank you.
